We would like to thank all the local music stores who have supported the Festival and the Loyal Blues Fellowships' Blues in the Schools and Artist Development programs.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

 

Workshop Hosts: Our workshop Hosts were invited to bring us participative workshops of their choice, to offer involvement and learning for musicians at all levels. We have expanded our workshop hours this year and have something to offer each day for the entire family. We encourage guests and performing artists to bring their acoustic instruments and join in.

Children’s Blueskool AreaThe Blueskool children's area will be open each day to entertain and enlighten our youngest guests. We offer instrument building workshops, rhythm 101, face painting, sparkle tattoos, Randolph the "balloonologist", sing-a-longs and a range of other activities. Children 12 and under will be admitted to the festival free, but must be under the supervision of a responsible adult.

FRIDAY JULY 16
The gates open at noon on Friday with two hosted workshop areas scheduled all afternoon.

"Wakeup" Jam Circle (noon Friday) hosted by Scott Pennington. Come play with us, sing along or listen as we take turns sharing some of our favourite blues, or songs influenced by the blues.

Children's Bluesskool Area (from 1 PM, Friday)

Meet Whitey (1 PM, Friday) Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist "Whitey" Somers will be joining us this year for the entire weekend. From folk & blues to hard rock, country to celtic, he brings a lifetime of experience to share.

Blues in D Minor with Paul King (1 PM, Friday) Learn how to tune your guitar to D minor, and the basic chord positions for 2 or 3 songs from old blues masters Skip James and John Cephas.

Meet Uncle Jim (2 PM, Friday) A Veteran entertainer from Peterborough, Jim Cope is joining us again for the weekend. His introduction workshop will be free flowing as usual, but always entertaining "Just my own stuff, maybe a little poetry as well. One way conversation, working on my gab." Jim will be hosting our busking workshops and will be helping us look for volunteers to take a turn at busking at the gate in support of Trenton's Foundations Youth Centre.

Beginner Blues Harp with Jim Fowler (2 PM, Friday) Harmonica 101 for those who want to start playing a harmonica. "A little theory, a lot of practice, and some handouts. A good foundation to start building your skills."

Blues Bass Basics. (3 PM, Friday) Sandy Sweet from the Bloodshot Blues Band shows us some walking bass blues patterns, the elements of riff-based blues, and will give us a basic understanding of "groove" and "beat" in the bass players' world.

Songwriting Forum (3 PM, Friday) Hosted by Mark Taylor with multiple artists sharing their inspirations. Mark is a terrific solo artist and supporter of the Fellowship.

Blues Guitar (4 PM, Friday) with Jesse Roper. This interactive guitar workshop is hosted by west coast guitar phenomenon, Jessie Roper of The Roper Show.  He will share some tricks and licks, and show you how to make your guitar sing!

Intermediate /Advanced Harmonica (4 PM, Friday) with Tony Vani. Learn simplified music theory and practical tricks: major scales, double bends, modes and more. Although primarily a harp player/singer, Tony enjoys playing guitar in performance.  Featured at the Kingston Blues Fest with his band Marxo Harp and other blues festivals.  He is currently with the band Stir, founded by himself and Debbie Hoskin, a well-know New York blues/jazz singer, performing on blues nights at Tuscan Flats in Belleville.

Introduction to the Blues (5 PM, Friday) with Tony Silvestri and Dean LeBlanc from the Tony Silvestri band.  These young musicians/music teachers are brimming with talent and a desire to share.

History of the Guitar (5 PM, Friday) Ron Nicholas will be presenting an educational history of the development of the guitar.

Firedance Drum Circle (6 PM, Friday) sends us Alex Snow. Firedance is an open Drum Circle, welcoming all levels of drummers to join in the jam. A variety of different instruments are encouraged, and all are welcome to connect with the music!

Bluegrass Meets The Blues (6 PM, Friday). We’ll show you how much fun it can be to incorporate these two genres!  Bring your big voice, acoustic instruments... guitar, mandolin, dobro, fiddle... and join us for some hot licks and laughs.

Friday Night Campfire Jam
After the final act on friday we will be hosting an acoustic campfire jam for our volunteers and campers. If you plan on camping please contact us for reservations, campsites are limited.

SATURDAY July 17 - The Gates open at 9 AM. Start the day with Breakfast at Rosie's, an informal jam and musicians forum at the pavilion, or for Tai Chi with Jocelyn Granger or all of the above.

Louise Ford - Family Entertainment (11am, Saturday) Family Entertainment. A well known local Artist and music teacher, Louise is an expert Finger Style guitar performer.  With a large family of grandchildren handy, she enjoys entertaining younger audiences with her songs.  She has also been an integral part of the South-Eastern Ontario Finger Style Guitar Association, and with her husband Bruce, regularly holding ‘house concerts’ in their home.  Louise currently performs as a vocalist and pianist at many area churches, as well as recitals, weddings, and other public performances.

Drum Circle (11 AM, Saturday) Alex and friends of the Firedance Drum Circle will get the blood flowing with another session in the shade. Bring your hand drums and shakers to help let the town know we are awake.

Bring-a-Lick Swap Meet (Noon Saturday) Our workshop host Paul King and friends show how we play a few of our favourite tricky parts. We'll show you ours if you'll show us yours!

Beginner Blues Harp (Noon Saturday). Jim Fowler brings us a second Harmonica 101 workshop. Play along and learn the basic techniques and skills. Bring your "C" Harp or purchase one onsite from the Fellowship.

Tubes and Tone (1 PM, Saturday) with Don Snair. Expert wisdom and advice on how to get the most out of your tube amplifiers. Don has a wealth of knowledge to share.

Slide Guitar (1 PM, Satuday) Matt Smith represented the Fellowship at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis this year. Slide guitar has always be associated with the blues and Matt has offered to demonstrate some of his techniques.

Andy Forgie - Family Entertainment (2 PM, Saturday) We are pleased to bring Andy to our family programming stage.  His career has spanned decades, touring extensively. In the 1990’s he shifted focus, producing two independent Children's CD's, "My Stuff" & "The Street I Lived On", the latter featuring Canadian icon Bob Homme (The Friendly Giant).  He also produced & starred in children's program "The Song Shop". Andy strill performs in ‘All You Need Is Love’, a celebration of the Beatles, throughout Ontario, USA and England, and continues to be one of Quinte's top DJ's and children’s entertainers.  He also divides his time performing musical therapy for the elderly at various nursing homes and as Promotional Manager for The Empire Theatre, Belleville.

Songwriters Forum (2 PM, Saturday) with Joe Callahan and friends. Songs start with either ideas and concepts or melodies. This workshop will talk about and demonstrate how to turn musical ideas into songs you can share with friends, family, audiences and record companies. Bring your song ideas and instruments and explore the musical creative process in a nurturing and supportive environment.

Blues Bass Basics (3 PM, Saturday) with Dan Hewitt and friends. Basics of "Note Notation", how to play some "Unique Sounds" not often heard on the bass, briefly touching on "Modes", How to play "Rock Blues", and "Stop-time Blues Scales"

Digital Recording (3 PM, Saturday) Brent Bodrug from Sli-Fy Chapel Recording Studio discusses the advantages/disadvantages of home recording, He provides an oversight into recording hardware vs. using a computer and software. Learn about mikes and how to use them, along with his tips for mixing and mastering.

Advanced Harmonica (4 PM, Saturday) with Dano - AKA Sugarlips, a longtime Fellowship favourite. See how the harmonica can play "any" kind of music when you start adding effects pedals, special tunings, and more. Learn about playing in first and second position. Tips on how to maintain and tune your own harps.

Electric Guitar Techniques (4 PM, Saturday) with Johnny G. from our longtime Rockabilly friends Whoa Nellie. An extremely talented guitar player, Johnny will share some great blues licks and techniques to bring life to your guitar solos.

Bob Dylan's Blues (5 PM, Saturday) with Doug King. Follow along as we play Bob’s blues songs from the early years onward. See how he mastered the rules, and then masterfully discarded most of them.

Harmonica Mics and Amps (5 PM, Saturday) Rick Cooke from the Tore Down Blues Band demonstrates the advantages/disadvantages of the different types of mics and amps. Some things to look for, things to avoid. Controlling feedback and other performance problems.

Busking 101 (6 PM, Saturday) "Unc'l Jim" Cope returns Saturday to share his wisdom and experiences developing the art of busking. We will be looking for volunteers to take a turn at busking at the gate in support of Trenton's Foundations Youth Centre.

Charly Chiarelli - Family Entertainment (6 PM, Saturday) Charly is a one-person tour de force. In the rich tradition of storytelling, he is the master of the spoken word and leads the listener on a spellbinding journey. Though he has directed his talent to everything from children's stories to a Hollywood movie, his solo performances are his passion.  Charly's virtuoso harmonica playing ripples through the elegantly interwoven spoken scenes. He accompanies himself with a musical mosaic of original, Anglo/Sicilian blues and haunting tunes.

History of Blues Guitar: (7 PM, Saturday) with Saturday's headline artist Jack DeKeyzer. Learn the origins of modern day blues music from one of Canada’s premier Blues entertainers! Jack has just recently received this year’s Juno Award for ‘Blues Album of the Year’, for “The Corktown Sessions”.

Saturday Evening Campfire Jam.
For those of you that are camping we will be providing another hosted campfire jam.

SUNDAY July 18 - Sunday morning the gates will be open at 9 AM. We will be providing lots of opportunities to play acoustic music throughout the day. Come early and help make "Breakfast at Rosie's" an annual tradition.

Wakeup Jam (11 AM, Sunday) Wakeup Jam "Circle": Come listen or play along with us as we take turns sharing some of our favourite blues, or songs that influenced the blues.

Digital Toys for Big Kids (Noon, Sunday) Tim Campbell has supported and represented the Fellowship since the start. We have asked him to bring some of his vast arsenal of electronic effects and digital wizardry and demonstrate some of the ways to use them.

Third Stone Music (Noon, Sunday) presents the Brighton Guitar Club and friends. Bring your acoustic instruments and sit in for an entertaining jam session!

Fingerstyle Guitar (1 PM, Sunday) with Rett Wills. An accomplished entertainer and guitarist, Rett will share some of the finer points of fingerstyle guitar.

Singing in Harmony: (1 PM, Sunday) with Juno Award Winner Georgette Fry.  This workshop will be presented from the main stage with much audience participation!  We have brought this workshop back by overwelming request from last year.

Charly Chiarelli will be performing again on Sunday in the workshop capacity of his choice. Charly's incredible talent as both a story teller and harmonica player are sure to entertain.

Busking 101: (2 PM, Sunday) with Jim Cope. Protocol, Presentation, Protection, Places, and People. from 3 years, 4-5 times weekly, sometimes at -6 degrees celsius. Where stage fright turns into "hurry up my friend I"m next!" ... But mostly? - THE great motivator of new songs and the fastest way to chops ... hmmm? ... might use that in a song ... first dibs!"

Riverside Music Presents (3 PM, Sunday) A showcase of students and teachers from Trenton's Riverside School of Music.

Acoustic Jam (5 PM, Sunday) Scott Pennington and friends will be hosting the last workshop of the weekend with an open jam session. Come play and sing along with Scott as we share some of our favourites and yours!
